Although things in my family were better after that, neither the constant rain nor my school situation got better. Riana was back in class on Monday, and that was a good thing. She tried to get people to stop being angry with me. But then Layah turned the class against her too.

“No one wants to be our friend,” I blurted to Riana as I picked over my dry hamburger in the lunchroom.

“Oh, Carmen,” Riana said, “they’ll come around. Right now, they’re just seeing through Layah’s eyes. For some reason, she has a problem with us. Even though it’s wrong, she’s passing her feelings on to others. Just as sure as I know the rain will go away, I also know eventually people will like us for who we are. One day we won’t be seen through Layah’s cloudy view.”
